So here's the deal. I recently got one of those magic-jack gizmos and decided I wanted to connect it to my server (which is on 24/7) so I could cancel my regular phone service and save about $400 a year.
I had, what I thought was an extremely reliable connection through Comcast. I get roughly 16Mbps down and about 6Mbps up (that's not burst either).
So I try it out and guess what? It cuts out like a crappy old cell phone. So what are all these great rave reviews I'm reading about people who are even using it from their 3G connections, well under the 18 / 6 connection I get.
After vigorous testing, it turns out Comcast purposely (although, you'll never get them to admit it) introduces jitter on their connection... This basically kills the quality for any VOIP conversation except for their own overpriced service.
For me, this is a deal breaker for using Comcast. I was paying them big bucks for internet every month and I am canceling as of today. Really, this should be an FCC issue and if I recall I think there just might be a couple laws about eliminating competition.
Song long Comcast.
